Advanced Academy - "Leading in the Public Sector"

Training agenda is as follows.

Day 1: 

  • 830-9am - Introduction to the Academy 
  • 9am-11am - Understanding Government and Navigating County Bureaucracy
  • 11am-1pm - Successful Supervision in Government 
  • 1-2pm - Lunch (on your own)
  • 2-3:30pm - Ethical Decision Making
  • 3:30-5pm - Leadership Influence 

Day 2:

  • 8-8:30am - Building Connections 
  • 8:30-11:30am - Budgeting Basics & Funding Sources 
  • 11:30-12pm - Academy Wrap up 

 

Detailed descriptions of each class offered will be listed under each workshop and cover:

  • Understanding Government & Navigating County Bureaucracy (2.0 Credits)

  • Leadership Influence (1.5 Credits)
  • Budgeting Basics & Funding Sources (3.0 Credits)
  • You must select which workshops you will be attending as part of the ticket process. Your workshop selections will be used to track attendance at the event. You must sign up for all workshops or your registration will be canceled.

  • If your membership is lapsed and you register for this event, your registration will be canceled one week before the event takes place. To attend you must either be a community partner or an active member. 
  • There are a total of 50 spots available for this Academy
  • Hotel rooms are on a first come, first serve basis.
    • Room block closes on October 29, 2025 (Booking Link sent via registration confirmation)
    • Members will not have to pay for their hotel rooms if they are part of the room block that the Association is paying for unless the reservation is canceled within 30 days of the event.
    • The member must work at least 51 miles or more away from the training location qualify for a hotel room paid for by the Association. 
    • If you reserve a room through the Association and cancel within 30 days of the event, your county will be responsible for covering the fees incurred by the Association.
  • Academy rules and what travel costs will be reimbursed can be found here.
  • If you will be requesting reimbursement for the training, you will need to submit the travel reimbursement form as well as original receipts within 10 business days of the academy training
    • ​To receive a reimbursement, all of your receipts must be itemized.

Working effectively in the public sector requires more than just knowing your job—it demands a clear understanding of how government functions and how to successfully navigate complex systems, policies, and processes. This training provides participants with a practical roadmap to understanding the structure of county government, the roles of elected officials and departments, and the decision-making processes that shape public service. PA|PG|PC participants will gain the knowledge and tools to work more effectively within county systems, reduce roadblocks, and achieve better outcomes for the communities they serve.

A solid understanding of budgeting is essential for making informed decisions and ensuring responsible stewardship of public resources. This training introduces participants to the fundamentals of county budgeting and the key funding sources that drive government operations. Participants will gain insight into how budgets are developed, approved, and managed, as well as the unique constraints and opportunities within the public sector—including strategies for addressing the challenge of unfunded mandates.
