TRAINING OVERVIEW
A day and a half leadership academy for those aspiring to become leaders, supervisors, or managers or recently appointed leaders. Leadership skills are necessary within all levels of an organization and participants of this event will gain knowledge and skills to lead others. The Academy consists of 4 training sessions which must be registered for individually. Participants must register for all 4 sessions and attend the entire event.

Leading through Your Strengths with Lucy Hernandez
As a leader, it is important to have the opportunity to be your best at work every day, for you and your subordinates. Having a better understanding of your strengths and the strengths of those around you results in a more productive and cohesive work environment. During this session, participants will have the opportunity to identify their strengths and learn how to best use them. This training utilizes the StrengthsFinder tool, developed by Gallup Research.

Leading and Managing within a County System with Wes Grose
When we are given assignments within our respective counties to lead or manage people, there are many unknown factors which come into play, and duties for which we are responsible which can seemingly conflict with what we believe are our jobs. This session will be an interactive discussion about how to identify and deal with things like the political nature of our jobs, leadership in a county management position, handling frustrating circumstances, and leaving the county better than when we found it. Come prepared to think and be challenged, and possibly change your view of managing.
BIO Wes Grose
Wes Grose is the former Crime Laboratory Director of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department where he was responsible for 300 employees. He has served in the field of forensic science for nearly 40 years, both in his government positions and in professional associations, commissions, and committees. Wes has also served in diverse leadership roles since 2002 and continues to do so since leaving county service in 2022. Father of six children, married since 1982, Boy Scout leader, and instructor in a "Preparation for Marriage" course.
Managing Up: What is It and Why Do It? with Evelyn Hengeveld-Bidmon
Managing Up is a great way to establish yourself as a leader, even if you are not in a formal leadership role. During this interactive session, participants will learn the meaning of and benefits of managing up. They will also learn about the role management, work styles, and communication styles have in managing up, and how to adapt to different management styles. Lastly, participants will learn about the role their manager’s priorities and expectations have in managing up. This session will give you tools to manage up and support colleagues at all levels in an organization.
BIO Evelyn Hengeveld-Bidmon
Evelyn Hengeveld-Bidmon has worked in the field of human services since 1979 – in public education, the non-profit sector, county government, and most recently as a consultant for universities, and the public and non-profit human services sectors. Evelyn served in positions of management and executive leadership for eighteen years, retiring from the position of Staff Development Program Manager for the County of Santa Cruz Human Services Department. Prior to her tenure in that position, she served as Executive Director of Mountain Community Resources, where she gained an understanding of the importance of fully engaging all members of an organization in achieving the agency’s mission. As a result of her experiences, she has developed a strong commitment to values-driven leadership, participatory decision-making, strengthening the link between mission and practice, and the importance of self-reflection. Evelyn has special expertise in leading and facilitating the development of individuals, groups, and organizations, and in developing interactive training curricula for human services professionals.

This training will focus on how you, an aspiring leader, can assist in Individual Development to build stronger people and teams. Participants will learn about adult learning and models for developing effective trainings. They will also gain a better understanding of their roles as both coaches and mentors to others. Participants will develop skills in having coaching conversations to get the best out of their colleagues and staff. Participants will leave knowing how to use these skills and techniques to facilitate staff’s development, enhance their teams, and build leadership capacity.
